"...The smell was ungodly, and the litter itself practically atomized and covered my whole house because it was such a fine dust...." Read more
Customers like the clumping of the pet supplies. They mention that it clups quite well, does a good job of masking smells, and doesn't track really bad. Some say that it also clumples beautifully.

Customers like the quality of the cat litter. They say it's the best cat litter ever, made from ground walnut shells and recycled newspaper. Customers also appreciate that it absorbs pretty fast, is scent free, and looks like coffee grounds. They like that it eliminates cat urine completely and stays together when scooping.
"...This litter is incredible. One 26 lb bag lasts over a month with two cats (I used to go through 40 lbs of the clay litter per month)...." Read more

Some say that the performance is truly magical, and the machine works way less hard. They also say it's easy to scoop and clean, and good for you, your fur baby, and your furry friend. Let’s see if it continues to be awesome and hopefully the price stays affordable!!!
Dust: I've used so many different litters over my lifetime. They are all dusty. All of them. I don't find it "covers" anything anymore than regular 'ol dust in my house. I give everything a quick swipe every couple of days in the bathroom and move on with my life. No dust drama. The reviews that describe staining...it's not staining - its dust. If you have a cat with white or light-colored paws you will see the earthy brown dust on their paws after they visit the loo. But they walk it off, rub it on your pillow, or clean it off themselves. Consider that it is a SAFE dust for them to consume and that is all you really need to know. My kitty with white paws has OCD so I only notice it occasionally to never. He hasn't ever been stained by the walnut litter. I do find this litter to be very dusty in one bag and then not so much in another. It's a natural product so that has to be expected. It wasn't created in a lab and won't be perfectly the same every time.
Odor: My declawed kitty does not cover his poo so it's "smelly" with any litter I use. Scoop the poo right away people. Right away. Don't leave it in the box. Crack a window if you can. Problem solved. For the record my other cat covers her poo and it does a decent job. If your cats poo is that offensive then its the food or a GI issue and not the litter. Just sayin. As for the litter itself, it has an earthy scent that I actually kind of like and it is SAFE for my cats. As for urine odor, if it's extremely offensive then its diet or dehydration or both. Research this and make sure your cat's urine is what it should be and it won't smell. Easiest thing to do is to scoop the box. Problem solved. I've had friends tell me they would not even know I have cats if I didn't tell them but they do smell my spaniel dog when she is due for a bath. Can't win 'em all.
Clumping: I think it clumps quite well but have noticed that you need a deep layer for it to clump extremely well. I don't use a deep layer because I like to wash the boxes and completely switch out the litter every one to two weeks and don't want to waste too much. I tilt the box to scrape the clump from the bottom of the box. I scoop boxes outdoors to reduce airborne dust and odors indoors. This is done right next to my pet waste compost bin so scraping the bottom of the box isn't an issue. I'd rather have fresh litter and scrape the bottom of the box then a thick layer of smelly used litter and waste a ton when I have to toss it. If your cat(s) don't mind 2-3 inches of litter and you don't mind wasting money throwing it all out, then yes it will clump very well for you. The best clumping litter I have ever used was a new one a celebrity cat guy endorses. I had to stop using it because it formed cement-like balls on the bums of my persians. But seriously it clumped like cement. I also reviewed it.
Sustainability and disposal: I lumped these together because it is so important! Its crushed walnut shells. Renewable and doesn't do any harm at all. It could only be better if it were from organic farming/harvesting methods. Which is why I didn't give it five stars. Its entirely compostable. I compost our litter, cat poo and dog poo. Yes this is safe to do and recommended by the USDA. Do your own research on composting. Our pet waste never goes in landfills.
Longhaired cats: It sticks to them. It sticks to their bums. It sticks to their paws. It gets in their coats. I find that I can pick it out or brush it out. It does bother me. I like a clean house and finding this stuff everywhere is really uncool. They can't help it. So I remind myself that I am so grateful that they actually use the box in the first place and get over myself. I plan to get a robot vac to assist my overworked broom. If you have shorthair cats you may not even notice or be too chill to care. I plan to try the pelleted version of this litter next but I expect my declawed cat will not use it. I may put the pelleted version in the box upstairs so that I may find less of it in my bed. Only one of my cats uses that box so it would be okay to put the pellets here.
I love this litter. I would love for it to track less and to be less dusty but its other attributes outweigh those minor inconvenieces so I will continue to use this litter until something better comes along. It's a great litter that keeps my cats safe, they will actually use it, and it alligns with my evironmental moral compass. 4 stars now but if they made it organic I'd give it 5.
Top reviews from other countries
Over the years we have used nearly every litter on the market:
- regular clay litter (almost anything is better),
- shredded paper (just don't)
- clumping clay (many, many varieties & brands, some pretty darn good, & while some are a little better, all are dusty to some extent). This was always the fall-back-to product when our other (no longer used) preferred products were unavailable but we always sought something better because of the dust & need to clean the box more frequently to prevent odors or nasty solid one-chunk boxes (if forgotten or put off).
- pine (tried once, that was enough)
- wheat based (not bad, still dusty but tended to leave a "musty" smell). Tried couple of brands, always similar.
- alfalfa pellets (ie rabbit feed). Less tracking but very, very musty odor.
- corn based (this was our previous favorite until we couldn't get our favorite brand -- $pecial Kitt* -- anymore). Tried three brands, some are still available but there are differences in dust levels, smell/scents, & effectiveness). Also tried non-medicated poultry feed (might be a very feasible & economical option for some but wasn't for us). Tracking was a little worse will some brands than others.
- lastly (I don't think I missed any others we have tried -- not we haven't tried, nor will we, silica based cyrstals) there is NATURALLY FRESH (walnut based). So, why is this walnut based product so good you ask? Well...
After testing for for almost three months now, we have found this is truly the litter with the least 'in-use' ODOR (ALMOST NO ODOR) & no bothersome artificial/overwhelming scents. We have left it a little too long a couple of times yet it didn't overpower my wife's over-sensitive, & over-reactive, nose.
It CLUMPS VERY WELL (we have tried the blue & green clumping ones so far) and fortunately it doesn't turn into one solid box clump (if it is left too long between scoopings)! When cleaning the box, the clumps do break apart more than some other clumping products but this also helps minimize box cling-tos & thus makes for easier scooping.
TRACKING IS LESS (not sure why as they are smaller particles) AND this product has the LEAST AMOUNT OF DUST we have ever seen in a litter to date! Low dust is important to us as litter box is in the basement utility room where our power vented water heater is also located (too much dust coats the power vent/fan/vacuum tube, causing the water heater to fail & throw fault codes that require the whole assembly to need a good high blowout cleaning to become operational again). Try & let you wife have a cold morning shower in a Saskatchewan winter & see how fast you'll want a different litter!
Initial price is more (even on sale) yet wait... THIS LITTER LASTS a very, very, VERY LONG TIME! With other litters, we were scooping once/twice a week & topping up with fresh litter (for one cat) & we had to do a full box change out every 3-4 weeks. Coming up to three months, we have still not needed to do a complete change out & still no odor (of the three 14lb bags purchased, we just opened the second bag a little more than two weeks ago!)!! With any other litter, we would have gone through a lot more already (typically more than one equivalent sized bag every three weeks). Thus WE ARE DEFINITELY SAVING MONEY OVERALL (when getting this on sale).
To summarize, 'Naturally Fresh' walnut based litter lasts an extremely long time, has very little dust, practically no smell with little 'in-use' odor, clumps decently without sticking excessively to the box, little tracking, & best of all, costs less in the long run (due to long lasting nature).
Update One: 02/09/12: So we have definitely noticed differences between The Green vs Blue bags. Definitely prefer the Green as seems to work better for odor control (Blue also seems to clump harder, and becomes a solid one-clump box much sooner). I have order pending for the Red bag (not sure when I'll get though as it is showing non-stocked at Amazon--dangit!) & the Purple bag (pellets - that will arrive sooner) so will update again after testing each new colour.
Update Two: 06/06/18: Have now thoroughly tried the Purple (pellets) bag. Might be an option if one wanted to scoop daily (not us), insists on all natural product/limiting additives that allow for clumping (not us), or is willing to deal with the odor when not scooped daily (definitely not us). Thus, the Green bag is still number one for us but we are now testing the Red bag (update to follow).
Update Three: 08/05/18: Red bag almost finished. Clumping was comparable to the Green bag however the odor control seemed... slightly different, almost had a slight musty odor at times (yet we are not sure if this has anything to do with heavy central air use over last month-ish). Thus, we still prefer the Green bag but the Red is a runner up that we may re-try in winter time. As for next bag, we have a Green one so may get to re-try it while the air conditioning is being used more.
The Clumping Wonder
This litter is like magic, man! It clumps quicker than you can say "meow," making scooping up those clumps a breeze. No more digging through the whole box for those little surprises!
Walnut Power: Odor-Busting Champion
The walnut base isn't just a cool gimmick. It's like having a secret weapon against odors. Say goodbye to that funky litter box smell; this stuff neutralizes odors like a champ!
Soft on Paws, Tough on Messes
Ever thought about your cat's comfort during those private moments? This litter is super gentle on those sensitive paws. Plus, it's tough on messes – a win-win for your feline friends.
Environmentally Rad
Here's a plus: it’s environmentally friendly! Made from natural, renewable walnut shells, it's like doing your part for the planet while keeping your kitty's restroom top-notch.
Conclusion
Naturally Fresh Cat Litter isn’t your average litter – it's a game-changer. With its quick-clumping magic, odor-neutralizing powers, paw-friendly texture, and eco-friendly vibes, it's the upgrade your cat's been purring for.
